Andreescu digs deep for second round win

Bianca Andreescu had to dig deep to overcome a slow start against American Lauren Davis at the US Open before eventually emerging the winner 6-4 6-4.

The former champion, seeded six, was down a break four times during the match but hung in there and fired off 19 winners after a troublesome start that saw her commit three double faults.

“This match wasn’t easy at all,” Andreescu said.

“It was just a point here and there that really counted.”

Andreescu said winning a tough three-setter against Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday – that lasted almost three hours – had been both trying and had given her confidence to move forward after a year struggling with injuries.

“Pulling off that first-round match gave me a lot of confidence,” Andreescu said.

“A lot of it is mental. I haven’t played a lot of matches this year. A lot of practice sets and all that, but it’s not the same as actually playing in a tournament.”

She faces Greet Minnen of Belgium in the third round.
