Alcaraz wins Queen’s to retake No. 1 ranking

Carlos Alcaraz will head to Wimbledon with the top seeding in his pocket after winning the Queen’s Club title on Sunday to wrap up a standout debut week at the London grass event.

The 20-year-old Spaniard will leapfrog Novak Djokovic in the pecking order at the All England Club when play at the major starts in eight days.

Alcaraz pounded out a 6-4, 6-4 finals defeat of Australian Alex de Minaur in bright summer sunshine in west London, winning in 98 minutes on his first match point.

“It means a lot to me to win here on my first time playing,” Alcaraz said.

“It’s fantastic, and it feels special.”

Alcaraz said it barely makes a difference whether he plays Wimbledon and No. 1 or No. 2 seed after swapping places with Roland Garros champion Djokovic.

“My chances for Wimbledon don’t change so much. I can say I’m feeling better on the grass than at the start of the week.”

Alcaraz lost his first set here on Tuesday but has since won 10 on the trot.

“Being No. 1 before Wimbledon is good for motivation and the confidence,” he said.

Alcaraz finished with 15 winners and 11 unforced errors.

The Spaniard is making rapid improvement on grass after competing at the Tour level on the surface for only the third time this week.
