Carlos Alcaraz pushed into gold medal contention on Thursday as the Spaniard posted a 6-3, 7-6 97) win over Tommy Paul in Paris to continue his debut Olympics with a semi-final showing.
The world No. 3 sporting the bright yellow and red colours of Spain made up for his loss a day earlier in doubles alongside iconic teammate Rafael Nadal by defeating American Paul with six aces among 22 winners.
After controlling the opening set, Alcaraz had to battle through a rough patch in the second set – he trailed 5-2 – pulling out victory in a tiebreaker after saving a Paul set point.
It was his fourth win here in straight sets and earned revenge against the player who has dealt him a pair of losses in Canada.
