Carlos Alcaraz remains without a career win at the Monte Carlo Masters after withdrawing on Tuesday a day before his opening match with a right arm injury.
The world no. 3 who was displaced from second in the world by Jannik Sinner, has played only one match at the iconic Monte Carlo Country Club venue overlooking the Mediterranean, losing in 2022 to Sebastian Korda.
Alcaraz announced his decision on social media; he had been due to meet Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round after a bye.
“I have been working in Monte-Carlo and trying to recover until the last minute from an injured pronator teres in my right arm, but it was not possible and I cannot play!” Alcaraz posted on social media.
“I was really looking forward to playing… See you next year!”
Alcaraz barely trained here on Monday as news of his injury began to circulate.
The 20-year-old will be replaced in the draw by Italian lucky loser Lorenzo Sonego.
