As he tops up this season’s millions in prize money with a Mexican exhibition appearance, Carlos Alcaraz has already cast his mind firmly ahead to 2024.
The Spaniard who finished second in the world to Novak Djokovic, said he is excited for the Paris Olympics and the dream of combining in doubles with ageing idol and fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz ended the ATP season with a loss to Djokovic in the semi-finals in Turin, while the 36-year-old Serb was defeated a day later by Italy’s Jannik Sinner for the title.
But Alcaraz insisted that he and his team are planning ahead for a fast start in January, after missing the Australian Open 11 months ago due to injury.
“My dream is to be considered one of the greatest in history,” he told local media. “Being No. 1 in the world has always been my dream.
“The year is very demanding, very long, and the last part of the season cost me a lot.
“I have to improve for next year, I need to realise that the season continues until November, not having those ups and downs (from this autumn).
The 20-year-old added: “I’m facing the preseason with enthusiasm. It will be a demanding year, but a little more special having the Olympic Games in the summer, after Wimbledon.
“It will be a tough preseason, like the ones I have done so far. To try to get strong, in the best possible tone to get to Australia and try to win it, which is what I go to every tournament.
“We are going to try to make it the same or better than this season.”
Alcaraz spelled out his Olympic goal. “That possible doubles with Rafa would be a dream for me, although there are still a few months left (to decide).”
“I will try to fight to get a medal for my country. That would be the biggest thing right now in my career, in my personal life.”
