2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia takes on American Madison Brengle and Venus Williams opens against Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

2018 runner-up Sloane Stephens takes on Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia.

Several players pulled out of the tournament on Thursday, including 10th-ranked Bencic.

Other exciting first-round matches include Konta v Gauff and Vondrousova v Swiatek.
