Even 16 aces – including four in one first-set game – were not enough to see Marin Cilic through on Saturday to the final of the Estoril Open.
The unseeded 2014 US Open winner took a 7-6(5), 7-5 loss to fighting Brit Cameron Norrie, who saved five of six break points to upend the one-time ATP No. 3.
The 50th-ranked Norrie stands one victory away from his first ATP title; his previous best was runner-up at Auckland in 2019.
The outsider stands third alongside Jannik Sinner on the Tour this season on match wins with his 18, which include a Delray Beach semi-final and the quarters at Acapulco and last week in Barcelona against Rafael Nadal.
Norrie will play the Sunday final against Albert Ramos-Vinolas who beat compatriot Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets
