Novak Djokovic confirmed on Saturday that he will give Wimbledon a go as his confidence grows less than a month after meniscus surgery on his right knee.
The Serb spelled out the logic of his decision two days before his first-round start at the event he has won seven times.
Djokovic was injured in the Roland Garros fourth round and was operated on almost immediately. His focus since then has been totally on rehab with a huge comeback goal in mind.
“The knee has responded very well to all of that so far, which of course then is a great sign for my participation in Wimbledon,” ther 24-time Grand Slam winner said
“That’s why I decided to be in the draw. I play on Tuesday. I’m confident about the health of my knee.
“Obviously once the tournament starts, I’ll have more I guess sensations and more feedback from how the knee reacts to a best-of-five Grand Slam match.
So far everything that was done was very positive
The runner-up a year ago to Carlos Alcaraz said he’s ready to go at full pace once he steps onto the grass.
“I didn’t come here to play a few rounds, I really want to go for
the title.
“The last three days (of practice matches) have given me enough optimism
and good signs that I can actually be in a state to compete on the highest level for the next few weeks.”
He then admitted: “It’s probably less of a rational and logical explanation, but
more of that inner feeling and sensation of really great desire to play Wimbledon.
“It’s a dream tournament. I needed to focus all my attention on it.
“I haven’t had any (knee) setback. If I had one setback, I would
be then questioning whether I should be here or not.
“But I haven’t had a single one – why not give it a shot?”
