Novak Djokovic admits that he is freely driven by the quest for more records as the 36-year-old begins a title defence at this week’s ATP Finals.
The Serb will be hoping to add another line to his legacy at the Pala Alpitour after beating Casper Ruud in the Italian final a year ago.
During the build-up to Sunday’s start of group play, the 24-time Grand Slam winner said he remains driven.
“I’m playing at a very high level, so records are obviously a huge inspiration… as well as (a place in) the history of the sport,” he said.
“I still want to create my own history and history of tennis and see how far I can go.”
Djokovic will have a tough ask, though, in northern Italy, with new local tennis hero Jannik Sinner in his group along with Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune.
“I love competing, I love the sport,” he said. “That’s my greatest motivation really.
“I’ve (set) a lot of records, I’ve broken a lot of records and it’s great,” he told the website,
“But even if I leave professional tennis now and reflect on everything I’ve done, I can be extremely, extremely satisfied.
“So I don’t have pressure to keep on competing, but I still have the desire and still have the level.”
Djokovic heads into group play hoping to cement the year-end top ranking again, holding off Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.he also would not mind picking up another year-end tournament title
“The biggest goal right now is to end the season as the No 1 – hopefully I can clinch it. I need one win, so hopefully that happens,” he said.
“And then of course, I would love to win the tournament as well. But that’s the goal and then let’s see what happens afterwards.”
