Showstopper Gael Monfils rained down 11 aces in Stockholm on Thursday as he powered into the ATP quarter-finals on the way to a new French record.
The 37-year-old reached the last eight at the Kungligahallen with a defeat of qualifier Filip Misolic 6-4, 6-3.
His 356th hard-court victory nudged him past countryman Richard Gasquet in that statistical category.
Monfils, who advanced in 73 minutes, will now line up against compatriot Adrian Mannarino, who booked his last-eight spot 6-4, 6-4 win against Roman Safiullin.
Monfils has faced Mannarino six times – the last in 2021 – coming up the winner in their last three meetings.”It’s going to be a really tough one. Adrian is in great form, his best season,” Monfils said..
“He has a tricky game. I will have to play my game, try to be 100 per cent physically to have a strong, physical battle.”
