US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev brushed aside American Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-1 on Friday to line up at the ATP Beijing event against Alex de Minaur.
The 12th-ranked Aussie spoiler produced his fifth victory without a loss on Thursday against Andy Murray, with the Scot smashing his racquet in disgust after missing his chances on three match points in the first-round opener at the oddly scheduled 500 tournament.
Victory in 81 minutes sent the world No. 3 into the second round. with the winner breaking five times in the opening rout.
Medvedev has never competed in the Chinese capital, but owns Asian titles from Tokyo (2018) and the Shanghai Masters a year later.
He maintained his Tour lead with a 39th hardcourt win this season.
“It’s not easy for both of us. Both of us a little jet lagged. Him maybe more, coming from Vancouver,” the winner said.
“Maybe that made the difference, but if I think only about myself, I’m happy with my level.
“I played great. The start of the match was not easy, but it’s never easy first round, especially in another part of the world.”
Medvedev beat de Minaur at the US open after losing his two previous matches to the Australian.
