Iga swiatek is taking nothing for granted as the holder enters her title defence at the US Open.
The winner of four majors is coming off a mini-break which she took to combat mental and physical burnout after losing in the Cincinnati semi-finals to Coco Gauff.
But even while defending her title, the 22-year-old world No.1 is far from over-confident.
“A lot can happen during 12 (past) months,” the Pole said on Friday. “I try to , take everything step by step, not (with) thinking that I need to do something more because last year I won.
“This is a totally different chapter, I want to just take a lesson from last year.
“I learned a lot during the US Open. This was probably the most important tournament in terms of me believing in myself and progressing on hard courts.
“I’ll try to just focus on that,” said the winner of three of the last six Grand Slams.
“Even if you won all these tournaments, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work tennis-wise the same way, be really intense, and mentally also be ready.
“I like in Grand Slams I’m kind of more efficient. These are the tournaments that I focus on, that I work to have the best shape on Grand Slams.”
