Carlos Alcaraz blew away Gael Monfils on Wednesday night in Indian Wells to claim another big scalp with a 7-5, 6-1 victory to send him into his first ATP Masters 1000 quarter-final.
Now 11-1 on the season, the 18-year-old will meet the winner of the Cameron Norrie – Jenson Brooksby clash in the last eight.
Alcaraz’s powerful play was key in the first set as he created three break points, converting the third to lead 6-5, before serving to take the set.
The Alcaraz ground assault continued in the second with Monfils hitting a number of errors as the Spaniard jumped to a 4-0 lead. He closed out the match with his fourth break of the night.
