Andrey Rublev overcame Ilya Ivashka and Denis Shapovalov beat Pablo Andujar to advance to the quarterfinals of the St Petersburg Open on Wednesday along with Russian home favourite Karen Khachanov and Croatia’s Marin Cilic.
Rublev took 100 minutes to dismantle Ivashka 6-4, 6-4, but Shapovalov had a harder path, losing the first set before prevailing 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 against Spaniard Andujar.
Rublev, defending the title he won last year, had to fend off seven break points, but hit 10 aces on his way to victory.
He will meet either Sebastian Korda or Botic Van de Zandschulp next.
Khachanov beat Adrian Mannarino 6-3 6-3 and will take on 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic next. Cilic eased past Albert Ramos Vinolas 6-2 6-3.
